Classroom Management in Elementary Settings
1. According to the American PsychologicalAssociation, teachers should behave in the following ways:

organize and implement instruction in ways that optimize students’ access to learning;

use group management methods that encourage student engagement with academic tasks;

use appropriate interventions to assist students who have behavior problems.
2. Have a schedule that is clearly posted and set expectations for student behavior and class flow at the beginning of the year.
3. Provide a print rich environment with a comfortable reading area.
4. Have designated learning centers.
5. Provide seating arrangements that allow for observation of all students and that allow students to collaborate with peers.
6. Have all materials ready ahead of time.
7. Be flexible.
8. Decorate the classroom with interesting and educational materials.
9. Provide a variety of activities for students to engage in each day.
10. Collaborate with peers regarding management techniques.
Behavior Management in Elementary Settings
- Have students participate in setting classroom rules.
- Display classroom rules and review consistently during first two weeks of school.
- Mean what you say and follow through with consequences.
- Praise positive behavior.
- Model positive behavior.
- Provide activities for students who complete work early.
- Consider a group token system.
